The chunky trigger has a lock to stop you squeezing it inadvertently, and it’s powered by the same 18V Power For All batteries used in most Bosch garden tools and power tools – fully charged, it should get you 15 minutes of inflating. Although this is a nicely made product, cheaper – and only slighter bigger – rivals are much more versatile. Keeping tyre pressures as manufacturers recommend saves fuel, reduces emissions and ensures your car will handle and stop as it should. However, it only misses out on that title by 20sec, and because it’s cordless, we think you’ll get that time back by not having to plug it in. As usual, the gauge is not much use, but I overinflate a bit, and adjust using a tyre pressure gauge. Our car is Lexus hybrid and not sure that running the engine, which it wont do anyway sitting in the drive, would power the 12v socket enough.
Not only does it offer outstanding value for money but it’s also built to a much higher standard than many of the premium alternatives. The smallest inflators are around 20 x 20cm, so you can leave them in your car without losing too much luggage space. The inflator is simply too slow to pump up most tyres from flat without exceeding its 8 mins on/8 mins off duty cycle.I need to be able to leave it while it pumps stuff up, unless it'll inflate a 4x4's tyre in 5 seconds or whatever. We kicked off our testing by checking how long each product took to inflate a 205/55/16 tyre – designed to fit a 16in wheel – from flat to 30 PSI. Anybody thinking about the SGS kit, it's worth noting that the tyre inflator included with the accessory kit is not capable of inflating tyres up to 80 psi.
